Class 10 Information and Communication Technology Skills | Operating Systems

1. What is an operating system?

It is an interface between the user and computer. It receives data and instructions from user and instructs hardware to perform actions.

2. Give examples of operating system.

Windows 10/11, Android, Macintosh (mac), Linux, DOS, and UNIX.

3. Write different functions of operating system.

i. Processor management: Operating system is responsible for management of different processes.

ii. Memory management: Operating system manages the temporary storage of programs and variables in primary memory (RAM).

iii. Device management: Operating system manages the working of input, output and other devices attached to the computer system.

iv. File management: Operating system is responsible for creation, modification, deletion and storage of files in an organized way.

v. Security: Operating system is responsible for providing security to data and softwares installed on computer.

vi. Error detection: Operating system can detect software and hardware errors and send alerts to the users.

vii. Job scheduling: Operating system is also responsible for scheduling of processes.        

4. Explain different types of operating system.

i. Single User Operating system

In this type of operating system, only one user can work at a time. Examples: Microsoft window 3.1, DOS.

ii. Multiuser Operating system

In this type of operating system, multiple users can work on computer at a time.

Examples: Linux, UNIX, and Microsoft windows.

iii. Multitasking Operating system

In this type of operating system, more than one program can be executed on a computer at a time.

iv. Multithreaded Operating system

In this type of operating system, different parts of a program can run simultaneously.

v. Real time Operating system

This type of operating system can handle real-life problems as they can give priorities to different processes and reduce execution time.

vi. Distributed Operating system

This type of operating system runs on computers located in different geographical areas connected with each-other through a network.

vii. What is GUI (Graphical User Interface) operating system?

In this type of operating system all files, folders and programs are represented in the form of graphical pictures like icons

Examples: Windows 10/11, Macintosh, Linux etc.

 5. What is Windows 10?

Windows 10 is a GUI operating system developed by Microsoft.

6. What do you mean by desktop?

This is the first screen that appears when windows is loaded. It contains icons, task bar, start button, notification area etc.

7. What do you mean by an icon?

It is a small graphical symbol representing some file, folder or application.

8. What do you mean by taskbar?

It is the horizontal bar displayed at bottom of the desktop. It has three sections:

i. Start button:

Start button is located at the left corner of the taskbar. When we click on the start button, start menu appears.

Start menu contains shortcuts to installed applications and options to search files and folders, shutdown or restart the computer.

ii. Middle section:

Middle section of the task bar displays the list of opened programs and many other options.

iii. Notification area:

It appears at the right side of the taskbar. It displays date and time, status of battery, network, speaker, volume etc.

9. What is Recycle Bin?

Recycle Bin is a folder that contains deleted files and folders.

10. Write names of Mobile Phone operating systems?

Android, IOS

11. Write names of Multiuser operating systems?

LINUX, Windows 2008, UNIX

12. Give example of Single user  operating system?

DOS
