Managing Files and Folders | Class 10 Information and Communication Technology Skills

1. What is a file system?

A files system is  the way to organize files and folders in a computer system. Generally these files and folders are stored in hierarchical manner i.e. in the form of a tree starting from the top.

2. What is the role of file system?

File System is responsible for organizing and managing the storage of data in computer.

3. Write steps to create a folder.

  • Right- click on the blank area of the desktop or within a folder.
  • A shortcut menu appears.
  • Select New>Folder.
  • A new folder is created .
  • We can change the name of this folder.

4. Write steps to create a new file.

  • Right- click on the blank area of the desktop or within a folder.
  • A shortcut menu appears.
  • Select New.
  • Options to create files of different types like  MS Excel, MS Word, Text files are displayed.
  • Select any one of them.
  • Type name and press enter.

5. Write steps to rename a file/folder.

  • Right-click on the file/folders
  • Shortcut menu appears
  • Click at Rename option
  • Type the new name for the file/folder.
  • Press Enter key.

6. Write steps to delete a file/folder.

  • Right-click on the file/folders
  • Shortcut menu appears
  • Click at Delete option

7. Write steps to permanently delete a file/folder.

  • Right-click on the file/folders
  • Shortcut menu appears
  • Click at Delete option while keeping shift key pressed.

8. What is recycle bin?

When we delete a file/folder, it moves to Recycle bin folder.

9. Write steps to restore a deleted file/folder.

  • Open Recycle bin folder .
  • Right click the file/folder you want to receive.
  • Select Restore option.

10. Write steps to restore multiple files/folders.

  • Open Recycle bin folder .
  • Select all files and folders you want to delete.
  • Click at “Restore the selected items:” option.

11. Write steps to restore all files/folders from Recycle Bin.

  • Open Recycle bin folder .
  • Select all files and folders you want to delete.
  • Click on “Restore all items” to restore all the deleted files/folders to their original location.

12. Write steps to permanently delete all files/folders from Recycle Bin.

  • Right-click on the Recycle bin icon.
  • Shortcut menu appears.
  • Select “Empty Recycle bin” option.
  • Dialog box appears to confirm.
  • Click on Yes button .

OR

  • Open Recycle bin folder .
  • Click on Empty Recycle Bin button.
  • Dialog box appears to confirm.
  • Click on Yes button.

13. Write steps to copy a file/folder.

  • Right-click on the file/folder you want to copy.
  • Shortcut menu appears.
  • Click at Copy option.
  • Right-click on the folder where you want to copy it.
  • Shortcut menu appears.
  • Select Paste option.

OR

  • Select the file/folder you want to copy.
  • Press CTRL+C keys from keyboard.
  • Open the folder where you want to copy it.
  • Press CTRL+V keys from keyboard.

14. Write steps to move a file/folder.

  • Right-click on the file/folder you want to move.
  • Shortcut menu appears.
  • Click at Cut option.
  • Right-click on the folder where you want to move it.
  • Shortcut menu appears.
  • Select Paste option.

OR

  • Select the file/folder you want to move.
  • Press CTRL+X keys from keyboard.
  • Open the folder where you want to move it.
  • Press CTRL+V keys from keyboard.

15. Write the difference between copying and moving a file.

Copying means there are two copies of same file at original location as well as destination location.
Moving means to transfer file from one location to another location.
