1. When and where was the concept of sustainable development firstly introduced?

The concept of sustainable development was firstly introduced 1972 at the UN Conference on the Human Environment (UNCHE) held in Stockholm, Sweden.

2. What do you mean by sustainable development?

It is the development that meets the need of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

3. What are the key concepts of sustainable development?

  • The concept of needs:  Needs of poor people must be fulfilled on priority basis.
  • The idea of limitations: Limitations must by imposed by the state of technology and social organization so that environment remains useful to meet the present and future needs.

4. What is the need of sustainable development?

It is needed to balance our economic, environmental and social needs.

5. How are poverty and environment closely interrelated?

Poor people generally don’t cause much damage to environment but whenever some damage occurs they are forced to deplete resources to live. This results in making people more poor.

10. What are impacts of unbalanced development?

  • Poor air quality and climate change.
  • Rising global temperature due to emission of greenhouse gases.
  • Rise in sea-level due to melting glaciers
  • Extreme weather patterns.
  • Destruction of ecosystem and biodiversity.

11. What measures should be taken for sustainable development?

  • Proper use of means and resources:  Resources like minerals, coal, petroleum, water, Chemical should be used wisely.
  • Positive attitude and holistic approach towards conversation:  People should be aware of their responsibility to use and preserve natural resources like oceans, forests, land, ecosystems etc
  • Integrated Socio-Economic Development:  Environment must be conserved during developments in health, education, agriculture, tourism and social reform.
  • People’s Participation: Maximum number of people should participate in development as well as environment conservation.
  • Limited Development: Development should be done as per the requirement because undesirable development may result in depletion of limited non-renewable resources.
  •  Long-Lasting Development: It emphasizes on present development without destroying the earth’s resources.

  • 1992 :  Un conference on environment and development in Rio de Janeiro. Action plans for a more sustainable pattern of development.
  • 1997: The Kyoto protocol signed. Legally binds developed countries to reduce emissions till 2020.
  • 2015: The UN framework convention on climate change (UNFCCC). A new universal climate change agreement in Paris to limit temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius.
  • 2016: Un sustainable development summit. Adopted the new 2030 Agenda of sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) in 2015ich were brought into force on 1st January 2016.
  •  2019: Special climate summit of government sector and civil society to find solutions to combat climate change.

13. What are challenges to sustainable development?

  • Lack of financial resources .
  • It is difficult in countries that are facing extreme challenges like war, natural calamities like earthquakes, floods, tsunamis etc.
  • Few countries  are using non-sustainable energy sources to grow economy and win people’s votes.
  • Corruption in developing countries.
  • Lack of effort at the local government level may also prevent the implementation of the goals.
  • No way to ensure responsibility.

  • Lack of effective leadership and coordinated partnerships between Center and State governments
  • Lack of social inclusion due to regional and cultural diversities in people.
  • Undefined scope and spread of SDGs.
  • There are not well defined indicators.
  • Lack of budget for implementing SDGs
  • No single organization is responsible for monitoring and ownership.
  • Lack of data to measure progress.

16. What measures are taken by Government of India for sustainable development?

  1. NITI Ayog of India has been given responsibility for supervising and coordinating SDGS
  2. States have been directed to implement schemes for implementing SDGs.
  3. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has been made responsible for developing national indicators for SDGs.

17. What measures can be taken to overcome challenges in sustainable development?

  • Government should clearly make an organization which is responsible for implementing SDGs.
  • Measure should be adopted for social inclusion.
  • There should be clearly defined scope.
  • There should be clear indicators to monitor progress.
  • Data should be collected as regular intervals to monitor progress.
  • There should be proper budget for SDGs.

  • You should educate yourself and other. Also help others in employment.
  • Don’t waste water. Create awareness among others about responsible use of water.
